Revolutionizing Retirement: Designing Your Third Age

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to share news of an exciting new chapter in our mission to help people thrive in life’s second half. Today, we launch RadioActive, the visual and audio podcast of the Oxford Longevity Project, led by myself and my fellow Board Member, Leslie Kenny. Together, we’ll be exploring the science, strategies, and simple daily actions that allow us all to live longer, better.

Our very first episode of the Live Longer Better Podcast is now available on YouTube (visual) or Spotify (audio)Revolutionising Retirement: Designing Your Third Age.

In this episode, we challenge the outdated notion of retirement as a withdrawal from life. Instead, we re-introduce it as a launchpad—your Third Age—a vibrant period after your career but before disability, when creativity, contribution, and personal growth can flourish.

We also re-introduce the newly named Oxford Personalised Longevity Plan (formerly the Live Longer Better Plan), which guides people through four essential areas: first understanding what ageing truly is; then taking action to regain physical, cognitive, and emotional fitness; reducing disease risk—because although modern medicine is valuable, it is not sufficient on its own; and finally, shaping your physical and social environment. Volunteering, for example, measurably reduces the risk of dementia.

Living longer better requires purpose. This renaissance—your post-work transition—is the ideal moment to pursue something you have always wanted to do. It not only enriches your life, but also helps compress the period of dependency at the end of life.

I hope you enjoy this first episode of RadioActive. It marks the beginning of a movement to empower every person to live with vitality, curiosity, and purpose.

With warmest wishes,
Sir Muir Gray
