Redesigning Your Day for Health

Dear Friends,

As we approach Christmas and the close of another year, it’s a pleasure to introduce Episode 2 of the Live Longer Better podcast: Redesigning Your Day for Health. This episode shares a message that I believe is absolutely vital, particularly at a time of year when routines soften and temptations grow: small daily choices accumulate into long-term change.

One of the greatest challenges of modern life is inactivity. We humans evolved to move - constantly - and to store fat quickly when food was scarce. What was once an evolutionary advantage has become a liability in a world where we spend most of our time sitting and surrounded by calories. In many ways, our genome is mismatched to the environment we’ve created.

But the good news is this: we don’t need dramatic interventions. We need better design.

In Episode 2, we explore how redesigning the shape of your day, sometimes in very small ways, can build rhythms that support health, energy, and longevity. We discuss:

  • Habit stacking and cue-based routines that make healthy choices automatic

  • Designing your environment to nudge you toward movement and moments of calm

  • How wearables and simple tech reminders can support consistency, though they are not essential

One of my personal obsessions - and I invite you to make it one of yours - is achieving 33 minutes of daily exercise. The longer you live, the more movement you need, not less. When you finally build the habit, you’ll notice something magical: breaking it feels uncomfortable, and keeping it becomes the easier choice.

And if 33 minutes feels out of reach, start with three. Truly - three minutes of meditation, or even three minutes of sitting quietly, can make a positive difference. Small rituals are powerful.

As you think about gifts this season, you may be considering a wearable device. While they are not necessary, they can be useful if they help you build rituals around exercise, relaxation, diet, and sleep. If it helps you or someone you care about strengthen the right habits for the year ahead, it may be worth considering.

As this is our final newsletter of the year, let me thank you for being part of the Live Longer Better community. I look forward to continuing our journey together in the new year - learning, experimenting, and redesigning daily life so that we may all live longer, and crucially, live better.

With warmest wishes for Christmas and the year ahead,

 Sir Muir Gray
