Low Intracellular Iron Levels May Keep Blood Stem Cells Young

Apr 8, 2024

Hematopoietic stem cells, the guardians of blood cell production throughout our lifespan, serve as a vital reserve for when the body needs rapid blood formation. However, as individuals age, the capacity of blood stem cells to self-renew declines thereby reducing the ability to replenish diverse blood cell types. This may result in impaired immune surveillance and contribute to the development of age-associated disease.

However, recent research from a group at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has revealed a potential means of preserving hematopoietic stem cell function. Through restricting excess iron in aged cells, researchers observed a molecular response linked to the cells' regenerative capacity. Intermittent iron removal in mice over 13 months successfully prevented the age-related decline in stem cell function. This highlights an exciting potential therapeutic approach to mitigate age-associated impairments in blood cell production and immune function.
